Wi-Fi, VoIP and Security

I read an interesting piece this past week in Unstrung about the challenge of VoIP across WiFi. It is a pretty in-depth piece and I recommend you read it in its entirety. This will be a big issue especially as WiMax and Wi-Fi begin to experience more convergence. It may be an even bigger issue as cellular companies start offering blended Wi-Fi Cell phones. One analyst cited had tested numerous Wi-Fi phones and found problems ranging from Smurf Attacks or (Denial of Service [DOS]) attacks to more or less root access on the phone. Not good. In any event this piece covers the basic gamut of types of attacks to plan for. As service providers, this will be an increasing problem for our industry. What do you want to bet that your customers will look to you to at least try to help them with these kinds of problems. Personally, I look at problems like these as opportunities to differentiate your company from the behemoths. Know more, help more and stand-out more. You will have to anyway just to survive. Why not make it a strength. Tim Sanders,  tim@thefinalmile.net   www.thefinalmile.net   www.wimaxglobalnews.com
